Geraldton University Centre model being expanded nation-wide by the Turnbull Government
May 25, 2017
The expansion of the Geraldton University Centre (GUC) model nation-wide is a testament to the success of a model first pioneered here in Geraldton, according to Member for Durack Melissa Price.
“This is something I have been fighting for since my election in 2013, and something this Government committed to last election.
“At the 2016 election, this government made a commitment to reviewing how we deliver higher education in regional areas” Ms Price said.
“That review has been completed, and the successful GUC model will be copied around the country.
“We have committed $15 million to establish and maintain up to six new community-owned, regional study hubs, based on the Geraldton model.”
The GUC has been hugely successful because it allows country students the ability to live at home longer and study externally, giving them the advantages of higher education without the prohibitive costs of relocating to a major metro area to study on campus.
The model has proven to be effective at improving both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous engagement in higher education here in Geraldton, with some 300 students currently studying at the centre.
“I am hopeful we can see the model rolled out across regional Western Australia, including regions such as the Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields” Ms Price said.
“A boost in regional student numbers is a boost for the regions, and I welcome the news wholeheartedly.”
