Building Better Region's Windfall for the Mid West

Building Better Region’s Windfall for the Mid West

The Midwest will benefit economically and culturally with community projects being awarded grants under the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund - Community Investment Stream.

Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price said the Mid West has received funding for two successful projects, announced today under Round One of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund – Community Investment Stream.

The two projects are:

• The Mid West Sports Federation has received $125,000 for the collection of economic impact data from sporting events in the Mid West region of Western Australia, over a 12 month period. This will paint a true picture of sports tourism in the Mid West and substantiate the economic benefits from the events. It is estimated the Pre-Season AFL Derby match this year generated $1 million for the Geraldton economy.

• The Wind on Water (WoW) festival will receive $80,000 in Federal funding to go ahead. The Wind on Water festival will capitalise on Geraldton’s reputation as a water sports destination, and establish Geraldton as one of the premier destinations in Australia for wind-related and water-related activities.

Ms Price congratulated all the grant recipients on producing projects that would improve local lives, economies and community engagement in areas that often miss out due to their remoteness.

“I’m really pleased to see projects from Durack receive a fair slice of funding from the Building Better Regions Fund,” Ms Price said.

“This announcement is a real boost to the Mid West, and the City of Geraldton.

“Without the Building Better Regions Fund, these community investment projects often struggle to get funding,” Ms Price said.

The Building Better Regions Fund is investing $500 million to foster economic growth in rural, regional, and remote communities.
