Linking Martu with Job opportunities in the Western Desert
October 12, 2017
Member for Durack Melissa Price has today announced $19,500 for the Kalyuku Ninti-Puntuku Ngurra Martu organisation to deliver a jobs boost for the Martu population of the East Pilbara.
“Parrngurr has been chosen as the site for the project as the Martu have expressed a strong desire for meaningful paid activity on their lands away from the catastrophic impacts of alcohol and other substances available in towns and communities across the East Pilbara” Ms Price said.
“The funding will go towards a project that will deliver an analysis of population movements in and out of the Parnngurr Aboriginal Community and systemic barriers to working in the region.
“We will conduct a skills audit of the community members aged 18 and over and develop an employment plan that will identify current and emerging employment opportunities available in the community.
“This will then be used to lever emerging new employment opportunities for the community with agencies operating in the community with the aim that this will increase Martu employment and community cohesiveness” Ms Price said.
The project will deliver an assessment of the costs and benefits of investing in a community facilitator enabled to work across the service providers operating in remote communities.
This assessment will be of value to other remote communities facing similar challenges.
