Price Slams State Government over School of the Air closures
December 13, 2017
Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price has taken aim at today’s announcement by the McGowan Labor Government to close the Schools of the Air, effective 1 January 2019.
“This announcement illustrates the contempt and disregard Labor have for regional students, regional teachers and regional families” Ms Price said.
“The closing of the Meekathara, Carnarvon, Port Hedland and Kimberley Schools of the Air will be devastating for very remote communities, and children living on stations in my electorate.
“All Western Australian children, no matter where they live, deserve the same level of education.
“The McGowan Government wants to deliver regional education services from inner city Perth, instead of the current bases of Geraldton, Port Hedland, Carnarvon and Derby.
“Labor overpromised at the last election on big city infrastructure projects, and the most isolated children in Western Australia are now being asked to pay for them” Ms Price said.
The Schools of the Air replicate as close as possible a regular school environment with school camps, assemblies, set lesson times, consistency of teacher and face to face interaction with classmates and teachers.
“State Labor say this is about Budget Repair, however the Federal Government committed to a 31.7% funding increase to the Schools of the Air over the next four years” Ms Price said.
“But, this shouldn’t be an issue about money.
“This is about fairness for regional families and their children.
“The children of regional communities in Western Australia shouldn’t receive an inferior education” Ms Price said.
