High tide for Broome’s sea rescuers

• New HQ and rescue vessel delivered for Broome’s volunteer sea rescuers
• Equipment and craft will help the group provide improved marine emergency services
• The Coalition Government invested $500,000 in the project.

A new headquarters and rescue vessel for Broome’s Volunteer Sea Rescue Group will protect Broome’s boating community and reduce maritime incidents in the region.

The headquarters was today opened by Federal Member for Durack, Melissa Price.

Ms Price said the headquarters were purpose-built, complete with radio room and operations desk.

“The new sea craft will give sea rescuers the ability to provide marine emergency responses over the 200-nautical mile Kimberley coastline,” Ms Price said.

“This vessel is a 7.7 metre amphibious craft that can be launched from low-tide environments such as sandbars and mangroves, making it ideal for the Broome coastline.”

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the headquarters and the vessel would increase the capacity of the organisation to provide community education to reduce the number of maritime incidents.

“These new facilities will improve the team’s ability to communicate with sea vehicles and chart their passage, and will provide ample storage for the new emergency rescue vessel,” Dr McVeigh said.

“Maritime safety is every seafarer’s concern, and we are proud to support this development which will not only make our waters safer but also boosted the local economy during construction.

“This is part of the Coalition Government’s continuing support for regional development initiatives.”

The Coalition Government invested $500,000 in the project, with the West Australian Government providing $450,000 and Lotterywest contributing the remaining $128,000.
