Remote Kimberley base station switched on at Kalumburu

A further mobile phone base station has been switched on in Durack, at the remote location of Kalumburu in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.

Kalumburu is located about 550km north-west of Kununurra and about 650km north-east of Derby on the banks of the King Edward River.

Federal Member for Durack and Minister for the Environment Melissa Price said she is excited to see this remote region become connected with mobile coverage.

“Mobile coverage for this area will be a great boost for Kalumburu; one of the more remote places in Durack,” she said.

“It’s a big plus in the case of an emergency, or for motorists who may have broken down on the isolated roads in the area.

“Many tourists visit Kalumburu and it’s rewarding to see the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program connecting outlying locations like this,” said Minister Price.

This base station is serviced by Optus 3G small cells under Round 2 of the Federal Government’s $220 million Mobile Black Spot Program.

People who use mobile phone service providers other than Optus will be able to use the Optus service to make emergency calls if the need arises.

The program is delivering 876 new base stations over three rounds addressing black spots in every state and territory, bringing 21st century telecommunications to those living in regional Australia.

The Federal Government is further delivering on its commitment to improve mobile coverage, with a further $25 million committed to a fourth round of the program.
