Durack Mid West sport clubs get healthy funding boost

Three Mid West sport groups have been successful in the Federal Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Grant program.

Yuna Tennis Club, Dongara Golf Club and Denison Bowling Club will share in more than $71,000 to upgrade their facilities.

Federal Member for Durack and Minister for the Environment Melissa Price said she is delighted these three Durack groups were successful as over 2,000 applications were received nationally.

“This demand has demonstrated that sporting and community organisations are crying out for help to upgrade their facilities and because of the Federal Government’s responsible economic management and delivering a budget surplus, we are in the position to increase the investment,” Minister Price said.

  • The Yuna Tennis Club has received $38,925 for new LED court lighting across three courts; resurfacing of three courts and patching of a fourth; and replacing fencing of all four courts.
  • Dongara Golf Club received $19,469 to install a transportable external ablution block with disabled/unisex access for use when existing clubhouse facilities are not available.
  • Denison Bowling and Recreation Club received $12,975 to install glass sliding doors to the club facilities to allow disabled and easy access for aged members.

Yuna Tennis Club President Ashley Eastough said it was marvellous news.

“It’s great to see some funding coming back to the bush,” he said.

“We are really, really appreciative, it will be a great asset for the district, it [these upgrades] will really finish it off, and with the lights more people will be able to use the courts for longer.”

He thanked club members Erin Green and Nicole Batten for their expertise in writing the grant application, and thanked Minister Price for advocating for the club.

The jubilation was shared in Dongara when Dongara Golf Club’s Ian Rose said the club really appreciated the contribution towards the project.

“It was desperately needed for the increasing number of visitors, tourists and club members using the course outside the times when the existing clubhouse facilities are not available,” he said.

“It is good for the town and people using the facilities and they will be able access them more frequently.

“We are trying to promote the club as a destination and turn more visitor money into an economic benefit for the club,” said Mr Rose.

Sue Irwin, Denison Bowling Club Secretary was equally ecstatic.

“We’re stoked to get this funding and really appreciate Melissa’s help in getting the funding through,” she said.

“The old wooden doors are very heavy for ageing people to navigate and today we need disabled access too; no one would have thought of that back in 1962 when the club was built!”

Minister Price said the Federal Government has prioritised investment in local grassroots sports because it recognises the wider health, social and community benefits that come from greater activity and participating in sport.

“It is a key priority of our government to promote the social and health benefits of physical activity and sport and our investment to upgrade facilities and infrastructure will provide a real encouragement for those local residents not currently active,” she said.

“The number of applications received was far more than anticipated and to meet the obvious interest, the government will allocate an additional $30 million for projects in early 2019 from the existing pool of applications.”
