Showcasing agriculture: backing our local country field days
May 7, 2019
Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price said she recognises the value of agriculture to deliver a strong economy and to keeping regional and rural communities across Australia thriving.
“Our local agricultural country field days are an integral part of our community, bringing people together to share in the rich tapestry of farm life and our local and regional economic and cultural strengths,” she said.
“Beyond the rides, show bags and fairy floss, our field days educate and showcase new technologies and farm products and promote competition in livestock and produce.
“The hardworking volunteers of the show societies are the pillars and stalwarts who bring these annual events to life, but they are often faced with ageing infrastructure and expensive repair bills, impacting on the quality of the field day and in some cases, meaning they are unable to go ahead.
Ms Price said in recognition of the value and importance of our local field days, a re-elected Liberal Nationals Government will:
- Recognise the importance of Agricultural Shows to Australians, by establishing a $20 million Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants Program. Grants will be available for regional agricultural show societies that run annual field days to upgrade and maintain existing infrastructure and for building new infrastructure.
- Promote the role of farming, by providing $720,000 to Agricultural Shows Australia to invest in our young farmers and mobilise the agricultural show network to promote the role of farmers and the value of agriculture. The government is providing this funding to support the Young Judges and Paraders Program and the Young Farmers Challenge.
“This commitment is part of our broader investment to ensure young Australians better understand agriculture and the sustainable way our farmers produce the food we eat and the fibre we wear,” Ms Price said.
“We know when our farmers prosper, our regional communities thrive.
“That’s why supporting our local field days with funds to invest in their future is so important to me and my Liberal and Nationals colleagues.”
