Renewable energy to power Port Gregory mine

A combination of wind, solar and battery will form a hybrid plant to power 70 percent of GMA Garnet’s electricity needs at its operations near Port Gregory, about 100km north of Geraldton.

The Federal Government has committed $3 million funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to Port Gregory Wind Farm Pty Ltd (PGWF) to build the $11.2 million micro-grid hybrid project.

Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price said this is a great outcome for the Midwest and the Federal Government is committed to investing in new renewable projects.

“This is a great example of the government’s commitment to investing in renewable projects that will deliver more affordable and reliable power for Australian businesses and families,” she said.

This micro-grid hybrid project, developed by Perth-based Advanced Energy Resources (AER), will consist of a 2.5 MW wind farm, a 1 MW solar farm and a 2 MW / 0.5 MWh lithium-ion battery.

In a first of its kind for Australia, the Port Gregory project will use refurbished wind turbines from Northern Germany.

AER will build, own and operate the site, located adjacent to GMA’s garnet mining and processing plant. The project is due to be commissioned in December this year.

ARENA has also provided funding of $13.5 million to Agnew Gold Mining Company Pty Ltd, in WA’s Northern Goldfields, to develop a micro-grid integrating five wind turbines, a 10,000 panel 4 MW solar farm, a 13 MW battery energy storage system and a 16 MW gas engine power station.

“It is hoped that other similar organisations will be able to look at these projects as a test case for future energy solutions off the grid,” Ms Price said.
