Native title respondents back on level ground
November 8, 2013
Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price has welcomed the reinstatement of $2.2 million in
native title funding by the Coalition Government.
“The reinstatement by Attorney General, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC is another
step by the Coalition Government to support Australian industry and provide much needed
relief, particularly to pastoralists,” Ms Price said.
“These changes were unjustly removed by the former Government, leaving many
pastoralists, local councils, commercial fishers and miners unable to access funding.
“This created an unfair advantage for claimants who received Federal government funding,
while respondents were forced to fund their own defences.”
Ms Price said the reinstatement would ensure respondents and claimants once again have
equal access to representation and to the protection of their rights.
