Best fish and chips battle
April 19, 2017
People in the Mid West and Gascoyne have been urged to champion their favourite eatery as the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and State and Territory fishing industry councils hunt for Australia's best fish and chips.
The FRDC will use a new online system to judge the 2017 Australian Fish and Chips Awards with the National Fish and Chip Award to be presented as part of the National Seafood Industry Awards and Seafood Directions Conference.
Thousands of West Australians have already taken part in the challenge and the Sail-Inn Snack Bar in Geraldton has notched up a handful of votes.
Member for Durack Melissa Price said the competition was getting fierce.
"It's been great to see some famous and iconic Australian fish and chip shops getting into the spirit of healthy competition for this all-important title," she said.
"Of course, everyone knows the title of Australia's best fish and chips belongs in Durack and it's our duty to ensure the rest of the nation understands this too."
Ms Price said Australia produced some of the best seafood in the world.
"There's so much variety, and it's fresh, local and sustainable," she said.
"The seafood industry is worth $2.7 billion to the national economy, and is a major economic contributor in many regional communities."
