Huge pot of funds could revive city
September 29, 2017
Three hundred and twenty million dollars in Federal funds plus $320 million in WA State funds, equals more than $600 million for investment in the Mid West! Melissa Price has suggested it be used on improvements to the existing port.
Murray Criddle wants it used to create a bypass around Geraldton from Dongara to Northampton.
Here is a far better suggestion.
Make the Mid West Development Commission, Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Centrelink responsible for correct distribution.
Mid West Chamber of Commerce has many hundreds of business members.
Ask these members if they would be willing to employ additional staff if half of their salary was paid from the Oakajee money?
This would have the following effects:
Reduce the unemployment register in the Mid West.
Employees would be retrained and money from their wages would be available to be spent in the Mid West (food, et cetera) this would result in more employment, reducing Centrelink payments.
Because the economy of the Mid West would be booming instead of on a decline, more businesses would be attracted to the area.
The sale of homes would increase, again increasing jobs.
Operating this system would see a dramatic improvement in the standard of life for many in the Mid West and instead of seeing people move away, we would see the opposite effect families attracted to the area.
