What the Papers Say

Toad threat inquiry

The leading force against the Kimberley's worst pest is sighing with relief over the announcement of a new parliamentary inquiry into cane toads.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment and Energy wants to understand how well control measures have worked in the fight against the spread of the destructive pests, and whether other new controls should be implemented.

Kimberley Toad Busters president Lee Scott Virtue said the inquiry should have happened a long time ago.

"This is great news and it means the Federal Government are finally coming to the conclusion toads will invade the whole of Australia if something is not done," she said.

"We will be recommending governments stimulate the community to be on the front line because this immediately reduces the impact on that area.

"Scientists and the Federal Government have in a sense knocked community efforts, and if we didn't have as many community members as we do out busting toads, we would be in a situation a lot worse than the one we have now."

Federal Member for Durack and Minister for the Environment Melissa Price welcomed the inquiry.

"The Government wants to ensure it is doing all it can to limit the impacts and minimise the threat from this rapidly spreading pest that is now prevalent in northern Australia," she said.

"The committee is calling for submissions to the inquiry and I strongly encourage Durack residents to make a submission."

Submissions to the inquiry are open until January 31, 2019.
