Major Boost to Create Safer Durack Communities

The Morrison Government is delivering an extra $4 million to Durack communities under Round Six of the highly successful Safer Communities Fund to improve community safety and help divert at-risk youth from a life of crime.

The increase means that 4 community-led projects in Durack will be supported to work with local high-risk young people to discourage anti-social behaviour and break the cycle of repeat offending,

Federal Member for Durack, the Hon. Melissa Price said the additional funding was in response to overwhelming demand from the community.

“This funding will support Durack organisations, with demonstrated experience in helping

marginalised youth, to build resilience, strengthen community connections and job readiness skills. We know that some young people engage in activities or have negative experiences that leave them at risk of joining gangs, committing serious crimes and disengaging from the wider community.” she said.

“This is a serious commitment by the Morrison government that will deliver real and practical benefits.  We know that crime prevention is an effective way we can support the work of our law enforcement agencies to keep Australians safe,” Ms Price said.

The 4 successful Durack recipients that will share in more than $4 million are:

·         Geraldton Centacare Family Services

·         ABC Foundation-Gascoyne and Mid West

·         Youth and Families Hub Broome

·         Mens Outreach Service  Aboriginal Corp, Broome

For the Morrison Government, community safety is fundamental.  We know that all Australians deserve to feel safe and secure – and that’s what the Safer Communities fund is all about.”

This program, along with others we are funding, ensures young people have somewhere to go to seek the support and assistance they need to build positive relationships and to achieve their full potential. Importantly, it also means our communities are made safer.

 Ends.
