The Morrison Government is spending $36 million to support agricultural
show societies recover from the effects of COVID-19, ensuring they can continueafter the pandemic. The program will provide a one-off reimbursement to agricultural show societies to deal with cash flow pressures caused by COVID-19 related cancellation of agricultural shows.
Federal Member for Durack, the Honourable Melissa Price said the COVID-19 pandemic has hurt agricultural shows in Durack, with most being cancelled for 2020.
“Agricultural shows are an important part of the fabric of a large regional electorate like Durack, showcasing everything positive about our communities and local industries,” Ms Price said.
“They create social bonds and, I believe, help improve mental health in parts of regional Australia where distance, and seasonal challenges and now COVID-19 cause significant hardship and distress. I am proud that the Morrison Government has recognised the importance of the continuation of these significant community events,” Ms Price said.
“The Morrison Government is reimbursing shows for costs incurred in 2020 and funds will be paid in 2021 and I encourage local show societies to check their eligibility and apply when the grants open,” Ms Price said.
Funding is also being provided to support the cancelled agricultural shows in our capital cities to meet sunk costs and this is important as Royal Shows are a major opportunity for rural and regional Australians to showcase their produce and livestock to a wider audience.
